The Yankees Have Their Eye on a Giants Infielder Who Can Do Everything

The New York Yankees are sitting at 45-28 with the best record in the American League. They lead the AL East by three games. And they’re still looking to upgrade. That’s just how this front office operates.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Yankees have shown interest in San Francisco Giants infielder Luis Arraez ahead of the trade deadline. Arraez is having a bounce-back year after a down 2025 season where he hit just .292. Through 71 games in 2026, he’s slashing .326 with three homers and 30 RBIs. Not huge power numbers, but that’s never been his game. The guy just hits.

Here’s the part that might matter more for New York: Arraez has been really good defensively at second base this season. His 10 outs above average rank in the 99th percentile leaguewide. That’s a massive leap for a guy who spent years being labeled as a bat-first player who’d eventually have to move off the position. He’s on a one-year, $12 million deal and will be a free agent this winter, which makes him a classic rental. The Giants are struggling, so moving him for prospect capital makes sense.

The Yankees current infield situation is… a thing. Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt split time at first. Jazz Chisholm Jr. holds down second. Jose Caballero and Anthony Volpe have been sharing shortstop, and Ryan McMahon is at third. Arraez has extensive experience at first and second, and he can also fill in at shortstop or third in a pinch. That kind of versatility is useful on a team that’s had to patch together its infield all season.

There will be competition. Arraez reportedly has suitors within his own division, and a few other contenders could get involved too. The Yankees aren’t alone in this, and they might have to overpay a little if they want him in pinstripes. But with the way Arraez is playing and the kind of rental price San Francisco would likely ask for, it’s a pretty logical fit on paper.

Feinsand did note that Arraez is a strong rental candidate given his expiring deal. The Giants front office hasn’t tipped its hand yet on whether they’ll actually move him. But when a fringe contender has a productive veteran on a one-year contract and July rolls around, you usually know where that’s headed.
