Caitlin Clark finally gave the world a release date for her first signature sneaker. The Nike Caitlin 1 drops on October 1. And based on the way she talked about it Thursday, the Indiana Fever guard is still processing the moment.

“Kind of like a kid on Christmas,” Clark said at a media conference. “You get to show the world what you’ve been working on for a couple of years, and you’re just really proud of the work that we did together. For myself, obviously, it’s been a long time coming. So I’m just really thankful.”

She wore the all-blue colorway Thursday against the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. And even then, she couldn’t quite believe it was real.

“Getting to play in them today, I feel like I keep looking down at my shoes when I’m warming up,” Clark said. “I’m sure I won’t do that in the game. I’ll be just playing in the flow. But it’s obviously super cool.”

Two years in the making

Clark signed an eight-year, $28 million deal with Nike just weeks after the Fever made her the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA draft. For a player who had already turned Iowa into a national phenomenon and dragged women’s basketball into the mainstream, the shoe was the next logical step.

It took two years to get here. But the timeline never really mattered to Clark. She was busy proving people wrong. A lot of critics and even some fellow players said her game wouldn’t translate to the WNBA. Last season was a grinding, injury-riddled campaign that slowed her momentum. But betting against her has never worked out for anyone.

The two-time All-Star still has the kind of gravity that lifts everyone around her. Her signature shoe is just the latest symbol of that. The Fever posted a clip of her talking about it on social media, and it got the usual Clark treatment — thousands of likes, hundreds of retweets, fans acting like they just found out their favorite band is touring again.

There’s no telling what her next season looks like coming off the injuries. But the shoe is here. October 1 is locked in. And Caitlin Clark will be out there wearing her own name on her feet, probably still sneaking a glance down during warmups.
