Messi Breaks Down After World Cup Hat Trick. His Family Says the Reason Is Private.

Lionel Messi scored a hat trick in Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria. He tied Miroslav Klose’s all-time goals record. And then he cried.

Reporters asked why after the 3-0 win. Messi didn’t dodge it exactly, but he kept it vague. “Honestly, completely unrelated to the sport, I went through some difficult, complicated days,” he said. “I’m grateful to the entire delegation, to my teammates. They were always there for me, as always.”

The speculation started immediately. Was he hurt? Was something wrong with his family? Social media lit up with theories, some of them wild.

Then on Thursday, the Messi family put out a statement. It confirmed what had been rumored: Messi’s father, Jorge, is dealing with a health issue. The statement said he’s under medical supervision, recovering, and “progressing favorably.”

But the family was clearly frustrated with how the media had handled it. They called out “the lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion” from various outlets and individuals who treated the situation like gossip. The message was blunt: only the closest relatives have real information, so don’t believe anything from unofficial sources.

Jorge Messi has been a constant presence throughout his son’s career. He was a factory supervisor back in Rosario before becoming Lionel’s agent and business manager. He’s the guy who handled the contracts, the endorsements, the logistics. Basically the one person Messi trusts with everything off the field.

The family asked for “responsibility, prudence, and humanity” going forward. They also thanked fans for the support they’ve received, but made it clear that privacy is the priority right now. “A person’s health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest,” the statement read.

So that’s where it stands. Messi is tied with Klose at the top of the World Cup scoring list with 16 goals. He’s got at least a couple more games in this tournament to break the record. But none of that is what he’s thinking about right now.
