Aurelien Tchouameni has been Manchester United’s midfield fantasy for months. Now, with Jose Mourinho back at the Real Madrid helm, that fantasy may finally have a price tag.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Madrid may be willing to part with the 26-year-old French international this summer in order to fund a move for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. The club needs to offload a midfielder first, and Tchouameni’s name has reportedly entered the conversation alongside Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Ceballos.
For United, this is the opening they’ve been quietly waiting for.
A Dream Target, Finally in Reach
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has repeatedly described Tchouameni as a “dream target” for the Red Devils. On his Here We Go podcast in early May, Romano confirmed United’s interest, even after a training ground altercation between Tchouameni and Federico Valverde briefly dominated headlines.
“He’s eventually a dream target for Manchester United, but that doesn’t mean Tchouameni is going to Man Utd because he had a fight with Valverde,” Romano said at the time.
Since then, the calculus has shifted. Mourinho’s appointment as head coach — his second stint at the Bernabéu — has created a ripple effect. Squad roles are being re-evaluated, and Tchouameni, under contract through 2028, suddenly appears less untouchable.
What United Already Has — and What They Still Need
Manchester United have already secured a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, a Brazilian defensive midfielder who will bolster Michael Carrick’s options. But with Champions League and Premier League campaigns ahead, the club’s INEOS ownership is pushing for another high-level midfielder.
Tchouameni fits that profile. At his best, he’s one of the premier holding midfielders in world football — physical, positionally disciplined, and capable of dictating tempo. United believe he could be the long-term anchor their midfield has lacked since Carrick himself retired.
Still, the cost will be steep. Mundo Deportivo notes that any deal would require a “substantial fee,” which Madrid would then reroute toward their own targets. United have not commented on the reports, and the team has not confirmed any formal approach.
The Tension Beneath the Surface
The rumored rift between Tchouameni and Valverde may have been downplayed at the time, but it hinted at underlying friction in a Madrid midfield stacked with talent. With Camavinga also a potential departure, Los Blancos appear ready to reshape their engine room.
For United, timing is everything. If Madrid are serious about selling, the Red Devils may not get a better chance to land a player they’ve tracked for years. The question now is whether they’re willing to write the check.
