Dave Roberts Sees Shades of Michael Conforto in Kyle Tucker’s Rough Start with Dodgers

Kyle Tucker arrived in Los Angeles with a $240 million price tag and superstar expectations. Through the first two months of the season, the numbers tell a different story — and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is starting to draw parallels to another big-name outfielder who struggled to find his footing in Chavez Ravine.

Roberts compared Tucker’s early-season difficulties to those of Michael Conforto in 2025, a season where Conforto battled inconsistency while adjusting to the Dodgers’ high-pressure environment. Speaking on Dodger Talk with David Vassegh, Roberts laid out the similarities plainly.

“There’s a lot of star power in our room, and regardless of who you are, to come into this can be daunting,” Roberts said. “It’s a very open and friendly clubhouse, but I certainly think as peers, you try to play the comparison game, which is pretty tough.”

A Slow Adjustment to the Spotlight

Tucker is hitting .241 with six home runs and 40 RBIs in his first season with the Dodgers — a far cry from the production the team expected when they signed the 28-year-old to a massive contract. The struggles have been well-documented, and Roberts acknowledged that the transition hasn’t been seamless.

“I do think Kyle might be in that similar boat,” Roberts continued. “I haven’t had that conversation with him yet. I’m still trying to learn him. As manager, you don’t want to push too much too soon, and sort of push players away. But I’m gaining more information every day with Kyle.”

Roberts pointed to a recent day off during Philadelphia series as a turning point, noting that Tucker has looked sharper in the games since. “I will say, the last couple games, he’s been better. We gave him a day off in that Phillies series, I think that was a benefit. So we’ll see. I’m keeping a watchful eye on him.”

Learning from the Conforto Experience

Roberts recalled having a “good heart-to-heart” with Conforto last season, a conversation that “resonated” with the veteran outfielder and helped him settle into a rhythm. He’s hoping to replicate that approach with Tucker, though he emphasized the importance of timing.

“I haven’t had that conversation with him yet,” Roberts said. “I’m still trying to learn him.”

For a Dodgers team built on depth and star power, Tucker’s slump creates an uncomfortable question: Can a player making $240 million find his groove in a clubhouse full of superstars? The early returns suggest it’s not as simple as putting on the blue jersey.

The Dodgers have not indicated any concern about Tucker’s long-term fit, but Roberts’ public comparison to Conforto signals that the manager is watching closely. Whether Tucker follows Conforto’s path toward eventual consistency or continues to struggle remains one of the more intriguing storylines in Los Angeles this summer.
