How Masai Ujiri’s Toronto Ties Could Decide the Mavericks’ Next Coach

When the Dallas Mavericks moved on from Jason Kidd earlier this summer, most fans expected a straightforward search. Instead, the process has turned into a quiet reunion of sorts — with Toronto connections popping up at every turn.

The man pulling the strings? Masai Ujiri, the newly installed front office executive in Dallas, who spent years building championship culture north of the border. And according to multiple reports, he’s looking for a head coach who already speaks that language.

The Name Gaining the Most Traction

NBA insider Marc Stein reported this week that Raptors assistant Jama Mahlalela remains a serious contender for the Dallas job. Stein noted that Mahlalela, along with Minnesota’s Micah Nori and Houston’s Royal Ivey, continues to factor heavily into Ujiri’s thinking if he decides to hire from the assistant ranks.

Mahlalela worked directly under Ujiri in Toronto, and their familiarity is no small detail. According to Stein, Mahlalela has the closest working relationship with Ujiri among all known candidates. That kind of trust — especially for a first-time head coach — could tip the scales.

Why the Kidd Decision Still Raises Eyebrows

Kidd wasn’t just fired — he was let go after building what appeared to be real chemistry with Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg. Flagg emerged as the face of Dallas’s rebuild, and the duo seemed positioned to grow together. The team has not confirmed any rift, but the swift decision to clean house suggests Ujiri wanted a clean slate with his own voice leading the huddle.

Fans online noted the timing was especially odd given Flagg’s public praise for Kidd during the season. But front office changes often bring philosophical shifts, and Ujiri is known for moving decisively when he sees a mismatch.

Other Names in the Mix

Micah Nori brings a different resume. He stepped in for Chris Finch during Minnesota’s 2024 Western Conference Finals run and earned respect for keeping the Timberwolves competitive under pressure. That short head coaching stint — even in an interim role — gives him an edge in experience over Mahlalela.

Royal Ivey, currently with Houston, and veteran coach Terry Stotts also remain in the conversation. Stotts, a former head coach in Portland, would bring the most experience but less alignment with Ujiri’s modern, player-development-focused approach.

According to Stein, it’s still unclear whether new names will enter the field as the search continues into July.

What Happens Next

The Mavericks are building around Flagg and a young core, which means the next coach needs to develop talent as much as win games. Ujiri’s track record in Toronto suggests he’ll prioritize fit over flash. If that’s the case, Mahlalela might be the quiet favorite — even if the search isn’t over yet.

Dallas has not set a firm deadline, but with summer league approaching and roster moves still pending, the front office likely wants this resolved before August.
