West Ham’s Relegation Could Help Manchester United Solve Its Left Wing Problem

Crysencio Summerville scored a goal at the World Cup this month. He scored in five straight Premier League games last winter. And this summer, Manchester United is eyeing him as part of a potential double dip into West Ham’s roster after the Hammers were relegated.

The Netherlands international is on United’s shortlist as the club looks to strengthen its left wing options ahead of next season, according to reports. Interest is still in the early stages, but the Red Devils are also keeping tabs on midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they assess available talent from the newly relegated London side.

Summerville’s Rise Hasn’t Gone Unnoticed

Summerville arrived at West Ham from Leeds for £25 million two years ago, fresh off being named the Championship’s Player of the Year for 2023-24. That form carried into the Premier League — he rattled off goals in five consecutive matches for the Hammers in January and February — but it wasn’t enough to keep the club in the top flight.

He then scored his first international goal for the Netherlands in a 2-2 draw with Japan at the 2026 World Cup, a moment that confirmed his growing reputation on the global stage.

Fernandes Could Help Rebuild United’s Midfield

Mateus Fernandes is attracting significant interest from multiple clubs, with United reportedly among the suitors. The Portuguese midfielder could be part of a broader midfield overhaul at Old Trafford. United is closing in on Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson as its first signing of the summer, a deal expected to cost around £35 million.

Bringing in Fernandes alongside Ederson would give manager Michael Carrick more depth and versatility in the middle of the park — an area that has been a priority for the club this transfer window.

Rashford’s Uncertain Future

United may have one left winger returning to the squad if Barcelona decides not to trigger its option to buy Marcus Rashford. The La Liga club has so far not exercised that clause, leaving the England international’s future in limbo. Sources indicate United could still sell Rashford this summer rather than bring him back into the fold.

That uncertainty makes the pursuit of Summerville more logical. If Rashford leaves, United would need a proven, in-form winger to step into the role. Summerville fits that description, and his experience in the Premier League and at international level makes him a low-risk target.

West Ham’s relegation opens the door for a fire sale of sorts. United is not the only club circling, but the early interest suggests the Red Devils see an opportunity to strengthen two positions from one source. Whether Carrick can land both targets before other suitors move will be one of the storylines to watch as the summer window heats up.
