Real Madrid didn’t just sign Marc Cucurella. They stole him — in plain sight, in under a day, and from under Barcelona’s nose.
On Wednesday, the Spanish left-back was still being linked with a return to Camp Nou. By Friday, he was a Real Madrid player, signing a six-year deal worth up to €60 million with bonuses. The speed of the move stunned even Chelsea, who had been bracing for a long, drawn-out negotiation.
So how did it happen so fast? According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the turning point came during a phone call between Cucurella and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho while the player was with the Spanish national team in Chattanooga ahead of the World Cup.
Mourinho, never one for small talk, reportedly laid out the project in a few minutes. When Cucurella signaled his interest, the manager’s response was blunt: “If you’re on board, leave it to me.” By the next morning, news of the agreement was already leaking.
For weeks, Cucurella had seemed destined for Barcelona. The 27-year-old wanted a return to Spain after five seasons in England with Brighton and Chelsea. Barcelona was floated as his preferred destination, and the player’s camp had done little to discourage the narrative.
But Barcelona’s financial constraints created a familiar roadblock. Club officials viewed the departure of Alejandro Balde as a precondition for any serious move for Cucurella. With the World Cup already underway and no progress on Balde’s exit, the negotiations were expected to drag into August.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, saw an opening and pounced. Rather than haggle, Los Blancos agreed to Chelsea’s asking price — an initial €55 million with €5 million in add-ons — and structured the deal rapidly once they identified Cucurella as the right profile for Mourinho’s system.
One factor that quietly worked in Madrid’s favor: Cucurella’s family had long planned to relocate to Madrid eventually, as his wife is a lifelong Real Madrid supporter. The opportunity to accelerate that timeline by several years made the decision easier than many expected.
Cucurella now returns to La Liga as one of the most expensive full-backs in the club’s history. For Barcelona, it’s another reminder that financial caution — however necessary — can cost you a player who wanted to come home.
