Marcus Rashford’s future took another twist on Monday morning when the calendar flipped past June 15 without Barcelona pulling the trigger on the £26 million ($33 million) buy option in his loan deal. The deadline has come and gone, and Barcelona made it clear they have no intention of writing Man United a check for that amount to keep the England winger permanently.
That doesn’t mean Rashford is giving up on the Blaugrana. According to multiple reports, including from transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the 28-year-old remains determined to return to the Spanish champions — even if it takes another creative deal to get him there.
Barcelona’s Stance: Loan Only, No Buy
Barcelona want Rashford back but only on another season-long loan. United, on the other hand, have had enough. They want him off the books entirely this summer. The club is reportedly ready to listen to offers from Premier League rivals like Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom have been informed that Rashford is available for purchase.
There’s also a curious clause in Rashford’s contract: a £40 million release option that cannot be triggered by Liverpool or Manchester City. That gives Arsenal and Chelsea an edge if they decide to move — but only if Rashford is willing to consider staying in England.
Right now, that seems unlikely. Spanish outlet Marca, which leans toward Real Madrid coverage, still devoted its Tuesday headline to Rashford’s stubborn loyalty: “Rashford ignores deadlines: he’s sticking to Barca.” The report claims his “desire to continue wearing the Barcelona jersey remains unchanged” despite the setback.
He Saw This Coming
According to Marca, Rashford wasn’t shocked when Barcelona let the buy option lapse. He sensed it coming as the days ticked by without movement and watched Barcelona try to negotiate the fee down from the €30 million agreed upon last summer. Still, he’s confident he can land back in Hansi Flick’s squad — either via a renegotiated loan or a restructured transfer deal with fresh financial terms.
Flick personally told Rashford he was counting on him before the winger left for the 2026 World Cup with England, according to the same report. That vote of confidence is keeping Rashford hopeful.
His Numbers in Spain Were Strong
During his loan season at Barcelona, Rashford posted 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Those are solid numbers — especially for a player many had written off in his final months at Old Trafford. Even with Barcelona already signing Anthony Gordon this summer, Rashford believes he can carve out a role in Flick’s system.
But time is running out. United want clarity, Barcelona won’t budge on price, and rival clubs in England are circling. For now, Rashford is digging in. But the ball — and the checkbook — is in Barcelona’s court.
