Steven Gerrard Sets Sights on Man United Coach Steve Holland — and the Timing Is Everything

Steven Gerrard is ready to knock on Old Trafford’s door again, but this time it’s not about a midfield battle. The Liverpool legend, itching to get back into management after a year on the sidelines, has reportedly identified Manchester United assistant Steve Holland as his top target for a key role in his next backroom staff.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Gerrard is eyeing an “ambitious move” for Holland as he prepares for a potential return to English football. The former Rangers and Aston Villa boss has been linked with the Burnley job, and sources indicate he wants an experienced No. 2 by his side. His former right-hand man, Mick Beale, is now managing Belgian side Zulte Waregem, leaving a vacancy Gerrard is keen to fill with a Premier League-tested coach.

Holland, who worked as Gareth Southgate’s assistant with England before joining Manchester United, has been a key figure in the club’s dramatic turnaround under Michael Carrick. After Ruben Amorim was sacked in early 2026, Carrick took over as caretaker, hired Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, and steered United from sixth to third in the Premier League table. The job was made permanent, and Holland signed a new long-term deal along with the rest of the staff.

Why Holland Would Think Twice

On paper, the Burnley job has appeal. Armed with parachute payments after relegation, the Clarets are expected to bounce straight back to the Premier League. Gerrard, desperate to rebuild his reputation after a rocky spell at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, sees Turf Moor as a launchpad.

But Holland has compelling reasons to stay put. United are back in the Champions League after a two-year absence, and INEOS is backing Carrick heavily. The club is planning for a major push next season — and Holland, a lifelong United fan, is reportedly enjoying his role in shaping the team’s identity on the training ground.

“He’s a childhood United supporter,” one club insider noted. “Walking away from a Champions League project to manage in the Championship — even with a club like Burnley — would take something extraordinary.”

The Gerrard Factor

Gerrard’s return to English dugouts has been rumored for months. The 46-year-old hasn’t managed since leaving Al-Ettifaq in early 2025, and his stock has dipped after mixed results in Scotland, England, and the Middle East. He’s looking for an assistant with gravitas and tactical smarts — and Holland fits the bill.

But the timing is awkward. Holland is settled at United, valued by Carrick, and part of a coaching team that has unanimous buy-in from the players. The club has no interest in letting him go, and he’s under contract. Gerrard might have to look elsewhere — or wait.

For now, Holland’s focus remains on preparing for a Champions League campaign that could define United’s next era. Whether Gerrard’s charm offensive can change that remains to be seen.
