Man United’s Data Team Thinks Tyler Adams Outplays Rodri — And They’re Backing It With Numbers

Manchester United’s analytics department has reached a conclusion that might raise eyebrows across the Premier League: Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams, not Manchester City’s Rodri, is the superior defensive midfielder when you dig into the numbers. And the club is acting on that belief.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, United’s data analysts have flagged that Adams’ output in key statistical categories compares favorably to — and in some cases exceeds — that of the Spanish international widely regarded as the world’s best in his position. The club has been monitoring the 27-year-old American midfielder for some time, and that interest has only intensified as the summer transfer window approaches.

Adams, who is currently representing the United States at the 2026 World Cup, has made 62 appearances for Bournemouth since joining from Leeds United, scoring two goals and providing five assists. But the metrics United’s scouting team is focusing on go far beyond raw goal contributions.

Why United Needs Another Midfielder

United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson Silva, but the club’s midfield overhaul is far from complete. Casemiro is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, and Manuel Ugarte’s future remains uncertain. With Champions League football returning to the club next season, INEOS — United’s co-owners — have made midfield reinforcements a top priority.

There is also growing optimism at the club that Mateus Fernandes will arrive from West Ham United. The Portuguese midfielder is said to be “extremely keen” on swapping the London Stadium for Old Trafford, and talks with his representatives are ongoing.

But Adams represents a different kind of addition — one rooted in the kind of data-driven analysis that has become central to United’s recruitment strategy under INEOS.

“The hugely industrious midfielder has plenty of admirers,” the report notes. “Manchester United have recognised his output as analysts point to stats that in some respects compare to, or better, those of Manchester City’s Rodri.”

A Leader on and off the Pitch

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, who worked with Adams at Bournemouth, has been one of his most vocal advocates. Speaking to NBC in October 2025, Iraola offered a window into what makes Adams tick.

“Tyler is a competitor,” Iraola said. “He’s a great leader. You have to challenge Tyler. Even in training, he’s going to complain if any decision doesn’t go to his side. But I love these kinds of characters. They want even more.”

Iraola added: “He’s all the time focused. He’s a captain, you can see. He’s been in a leadership position in all the teams he’s played for.”

The Liverpool boss also noted Adams’ tactical intelligence. “He understands well that this is a collective side and he’s the first one from the middle who can correct the team. If he comes to me and tells me something it’s because something is happening.”

Adams is under contract at Bournemouth until 2028, meaning any deal would require a significant fee. But with Chelsea also retaining interest and Iraola now at Liverpool, competition for his signature could be fierce.

For now, United’s analysts are confident they’ve identified a player whose underlying numbers tell a story the traditional scouting report might miss — one that places him in the same conversation as the best defensive midfielder in world football.
