Manchester United have shifted into pole position to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to multiple reports, putting them ahead of Premier League champions Arsenal in what has become one of the summer’s most talked-about transfer sagas.
The 21-year-old Portugal international has been on the radar of Europe’s elite clubs for months, with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal all linked. But after United walked away from a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, the club has zeroed in on Fernandes as the priority addition to Michael Carrick’s midfield.
Why United’s Confidence Is Growing
The Times reported this week that United are “increasingly confident” of landing Fernandes, and that the player is “increasingly likely to make the move to Old Trafford.” That’s a significant shift from earlier in the window, when Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunners.
According to the report, Fernandes has told those close to him that he would prioritize a move to United if the two clubs can agree on a fee. West Ham, despite their relegation from the Premier League, are holding firm at an asking price of at least £80 million for the midfielder who joined from Sporting CP two years ago.
United have already opened formal negotiations with the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, as well as with West Ham, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. The goal is to understand what it would take to get a deal done — and early indications suggest the gap is closing.
Arsenal’s Admission of Defeat
Arsenal, who won the Premier League title this past season, appear to have accepted that Fernandes is leaning toward United. The Gunners were seen as a strong contender given their Champions League status and recent success, but the pull of Carrick’s project and a more defined role in the midfield rotation has tipped the scales.
That doesn’t mean the race is over. United still need to fend off interest from Real Madrid — now managed by Jose Mourinho — as well as Paris Saint-Germain, who are fresh off a Champions League triumph. Both clubs have deeper pockets and can offer Champions League football, though United finished just outside the top four this season.
What Fernandes Would Bring
Fernandes has been one of West Ham’s few bright spots in an otherwise miserable campaign. His ability to break lines with progressive passes, combined with a high work rate off the ball, makes him a natural fit for Carrick’s system. At 21, he also fits United’s recent approach of targeting younger players with resale value and long-term potential.
The departure of Casemiro on a free transfer has left a hole in United’s midfield that Ederson, the Brazilian they’ve already agreed to sign from Atalanta, will help fill. But Fernandes would offer a different profile — more dynamic, more creative — and would likely compete with Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes for minutes.
With the World Cup wrapping up and the transfer window set to accelerate, this is a race that could be decided within days. Right now, every sign points to Old Trafford.
