Rich Paul Says He Hasn’t Spoken to LeBron James About Retirement — ‘Believe Nothing’

Let’s get one thing straight: nobody — not even LeBron James’ agent — knows what the future holds for the Lakers star. And Rich Paul wants everyone to pump the brakes on the speculation.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Paul made it clear that the swirling rumors about James retiring, returning to Cleveland, or staying in Los Angeles are just noise. “Believe nothing that’s out there, because I haven’t had one conversation with him,” Paul said, shutting down the chatter before it could gain any real traction.

No Talks, No Decisions — Just Family Time

Paul explained that he’s intentionally staying out of the loop right now. After the season ended, he told reporters he would give James and his family space to figure out what comes next. That wasn’t just lip service. “At the end of the season, I made it clear that I would respect he and the family, because this is going to be a family decision for him,” Paul added.

They’ve played golf together since the season ended. But Paul says the topic of retirement or the 2026-27 season never came up. “When he comes to me and wants to sit down, I am more than prepared for every scenario that there could be,” Paul said.

What’s Really Going On?

James, who will turn 41 this December, just finished his 23rd NBA season — an achievement that alone puts him in a class of his own. The question of whether he’ll keep playing has dominated offseason headlines, especially after the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets.

Paul framed the decision as one James doesn’t owe anyone but himself. “I don’t think there’s a player that has done more for not just the game but people in the game that has benefited throughout his 23 years,” Paul said. “Whatever decision he decides to make, that is his decision; he doesn’t need to make a decision for anybody but himself.”

What Paul didn’t do was give any hint of a timeline. No indication that James is leaning one way or another. Just a deliberate, patient approach from the man who has been by James’ side since high school.

So What Should Fans Expect?

Expect nothing concrete anytime soon. James has earned the right to take his time, and Paul’s message suggests the decision might not come until late summer or even closer to training camp. For now, all the trade rumors, retirement whispers, and free-agency fantasies are exactly what Paul says they are: meaningless until LeBron speaks.

Until then, the basketball world waits.
