The noise around LeBron James’ upcoming free agency has been loud since before the Lakers’ playoff exit. But the one person who would actually know what’s happening — his agent Rich Paul — says none of it is worth your time.
Paul appeared on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ and flatly dismissed the swirl of speculation about where the NBA’s all-time leading scorer might land next. The message was blunt: the rumors are fiction, because even he hasn’t had that conversation with his client yet.
“Believe nothing that is out there because I haven’t had one conversation with him,” Paul said. “At the end of the season I made it clear that I would respect he and the family because this is going to be a family decision for him.”
There’s been chatter about contract numbers, about teams angling for LeBron’s services — but Paul insists it’s all unfounded. “When you think about numbers that have been thrown out, what we’re asking about and all these things, it’s all false. We haven’t had one conversation with anybody about anything.”
James picked up his contract option last offseason, setting himself up for unrestricted free agency this summer — a move that invited months of speculation. The Lakers were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round, and since then, the rumor mill has been churning nonstop.
According to Paul, he’s spent time with James since the season ended — playing golf, staying in touch — but hasn’t brought up the future. He’s letting the four-time champion come to him when he’s ready. That may take a while, and Paul is fine with that.
LeBron is coming off a remarkable 23rd NBA season, still playing at an All-Star level despite his age. He appeared in 60 games, averaging 33 minutes per night, and put up 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. His shooting splits — 51.5% from the field, 31.7% from three, 73.7% from the free-throw line — reflect a player who remains elite, even as questions linger about how much longer he wants to keep doing this.
The bigger question may not be where LeBron goes, but whether he still has the desire to chase another ring. Paul’s comments suggest that decision won’t come quickly — and that the public shouldn’t believe anything they read until LeBron himself speaks.
