Chelsea Lands Malard from Manchester United in Six-Figure Deal

Chelsea just made its third splash of the summer window, and this one brings a familiar face back into Sonia Bompastor’s orbit. The Blues officially announced the signing of France attacker Melvine Malard from Manchester United on Monday, with the club confirming a six-figure fee changed hands.

Malard, 26, spent the last three seasons in Manchester. She originally joined United on loan from Lyon back in 2023 before the move became permanent. Over 95 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, she bagged 23 goals. Not a blistering rate for a forward, but her versatility and pressing ability made her a regular cog in the United attack.

On the international side, Malard has 41 caps for France and 14 goals. She’s been in and around the national team setup for years, and at 26, she’s likely entering her prime.

The Bompastor Connection

This isn’t exactly a cold recruitment. Malard and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor go way back. “I have known Sonia since I was 14 years old,” Malard said after the signing. “So it is great to work with her again.” That kind of relationship matters in a transfer window where chemistry can be half the battle.

Malard also made it clear she didn’t just come for the nostalgia. “I’m so happy because I have a plan for my life and my career, and Chelsea were a part of that plan,” she said. “My objective is to become better every single day and to win trophies. I know Chelsea always have that as an objective and I have that ambition too.”

Stamford Bridge Beckons

One thing Malard is genuinely excited about: playing at Stamford Bridge on the regular. “The atmosphere is incredible and the pitch is close to the fans, so you really feel their energy. I love that.” She’s also honest about her history with Chelsea — she’s played against them plenty and apparently never won. “I have played against Chelsea a lot of times and have always lost so I know the team have good players.”

Malard joins as Chelsea’s third signing of the summer, following two other additions the club hasn’t formally stacked up in a single announcement. The Blues are clearly reloading as they chase multiple trophies next season. Bompastor’s squad now has another attacking option who already knows the league and the manager’s expectations.

The WSL title race keeps getting more interesting. Chelsea didn’t just add depth here. They added someone who has been coached by Bompastor since childhood and has a point to prove after three years at United that produced flashes but not a consistent starring role.
