Joshua Zirkzee is stuck in a weird spot at Manchester United right now. He wants another shot at proving himself at Old Trafford. The club, meanwhile, has pretty much decided he’s not part of the plan and has been shopping him around all summer. So you’ve got a player who isn’t pushing for a move and a club that’s trying to push him out the door. It’s an awkward standoff that’s been dragging on for weeks.
The Dutch forward arrived at United with a lot of buzz about his technical ability and his knack for dropping deep to link up play. But the goals never really showed up. He’s struggled with the physical side of English football and hasn’t looked comfortable as the guy leading the line. His game is more about combinations and movement in tight spaces than banging in headers or bullying defenders. That’s fine in Serie A. It’s been a tougher sell in the Premier League.
There have been flashes where it all clicked. He can take a pass under pressure and slot into a passing move with midfielders or wingers in a way that looks smooth. But the numbers haven’t been there. And when you’re a striker at Manchester United, the numbers are kind of the whole thing.
Clubs in Turkey and Italy have shown interest. Fenerbahçe is one name that keeps popping up. But United doesn’t want to take a big financial hit. Zirkzee’s value has dropped since he joined, and any deal that forces the club to take a loss on the books isn’t something they’re eager to do. Loans have been discussed, but United wants a permanent exit if possible.
What makes this messier is the Marcus Rashford situation. The club had hoped Rashford would leave this summer, which would have opened up roster space and given them room to sign a veteran striker to back up Benjamin Sesko. But that move hasn’t materialized. If Rashford stays, United may not bring in another center-forward. And that could actually help Zirkzee stick around by default.
United can’t afford to go into a long season with only one recognized striker. Injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion would punish that. So even if the club still wants Zirkzee gone, they might keep him around simply because they don’t have a better option. It’s not the vote of confidence he probably wants, but it’s a foot in the door.
Zirkzee himself isn’t making this easy for United by demanding out. He’s reportedly well liked in the locker room and wants to prove he can do it at this level. That’s great for morale, but it also means he’s not going to force a move unless the destination actually suits him.
So here we are. Zirkzee shows up for preseason, waits for an offer that might never come, and hopes the club changes its mind or at least gives him a real chance. United waits for a buyer willing to pay enough to avoid a loss. And the whole thing just sits there, unresolved.
