Manchester United’s summer transfer plans might finally be about to click into place. And the key to unlocking everything could come from an unexpected place: Istanbul.
According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Fenerbahce is preparing to make a serious push for Marcus Rashford. The report says the club’s sporting directors have already traveled from Marseille to Manchester to open formal talks with United. If that sounds like a lot of movement for a player who has been stuck in transfer limbo all summer, it is.
Rashford has been a problem United needs to solve. The club wants to bring in a natural left winger, and Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise has been linked, but the real target is West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville. The Dutch winger tore it up at the World Cup (two goals, two assists in four games) and has a relegation release clause that makes him attainable for around £40 million. Problem is, United can’t move for Summerville while Rashford is still on the books. He has to go first.
So why hasn’t he left yet? Rashford’s preferred destination was Barcelona. But the Catalans cooled on him fast, signing Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi instead. Other suitors like Tottenham and Aston Villa showed interest but never pushed hard. Nobody wanted to be the first one to blink.
Fenerbahce might change that. The Turkish club has already wrapped up a deal for Mason Greenwood this window, so they’re clearly willing to spend. And while Rashford might not be thrilled about moving to the Super Lig, the mere existence of a serious bidder could spook other clubs into action. Nobody wants to lose a player like Rashford to Fenerbahce if they think they can get him themselves.
If a bidding war breaks out, £40 million should be enough to win it. And that’s exactly the number United needs to trigger Summerville’s release clause. In a roundabout way, a Turkish team chasing Rashford could be the best thing that’s happened to United’s summer so far.
It’s not a done deal by any stretch. Rashford still has to agree to any move, and Fenerbahce isn’t exactly a glamour destination for a 28-year-old England international in his prime. But desperation has a way of reshaping priorities. If Rashford wants to play regular football and United wants to move on, this might be the push everyone needed.
Right now, the dominoes are lined up. It just takes one to fall.
