The Minnesota Twins are playing their best baseball of the season right now. And that changes everything about how they approach the trade deadline.
Instead of fielding calls about Joe Ryan and deciding which prospects to stockpile, the front office might actually be looking to add. Ryan himself has a pretty straightforward take on how to make all that noise go away.
“Winning just takes care of everything and it’s more fun for everyone,” Ryan said via Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “We’re playing good baseball, so hopefully we’re in a position to add some more guys. The Trade Deadline stuff gets exhausting at times, but this year feels a little different – and feels a lot better.”
He’s not wrong. The Twins have been a different team lately. They’re sitting in the middle of the AL Central standings but trending up, and that momentum gives them options they didn’t have a month ago.
The Teardown That Wasn’t
Last July, Minnesota did one of the biggest sell-offs in trade deadline history. It was brutal. Fans watched key pieces leave and wondered how long the rebuild would take. But Byron Buxton made it clear he doesn’t want to go anywhere, and that changed the conversation a bit.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan summed it up pretty well. “Knowing they can always move Joe Ryan this winter, Minnesota endeavoring to add before the deadline isn’t entirely irresponsible,” he wrote.
That’s the key thing here. The Twins don’t have to trade Ryan right now. They could hold him through the summer, see if this run is real, and revisit the idea in the offseason. It gives them flexibility they didn’t have when they were clearly out of contention.
What Happens Next
If the Twins keep playing like this for a few more weeks, it’s hard to argue they should be sellers. Especially when your starting pitcher is telling you he wants to stay and win. Ryan has been a reliable arm in the rotation, and moving him now would send a weird signal to the clubhouse.
The front office has shown they’re not afraid to make a move. If they see a deal that pushes this team to the next level, they’ll probably take it. But standing pat is starting to look like a real option too.
Either way, the conversation has shifted. And Ryan is making it easy to remember why winning matters more than anything else.
