Pete Crow-Armstrong was mic’d up during the MLB All-Star Game, and within about 30 seconds it was obvious the Cubs outfielder wasn’t just playing baseball. He was also auditioning for a role as Chicago’s biggest hype man.
In the top of the eighth inning, Fox Sports asked PCA about his love for the Bears. He didn’t hold back.
“I went to five games last year, I went to every playoff game,” he said. “It was a blast, man. They’re fun to watch.”
That’s a guy who’s all in. And he credits his dad for turning him into a diehard.
“He was a big Bears fan. Devin Hester was my guy. I love Matt Forte. But I will still watch Devin Hester highlights to this day. So big Bears fan through and through, man.”
The Bears officially acknowledged the moment, too. The team’s social account quote-tweeted the Cubs’ post with a simple: “Bear down.”
Crow-Armstrong went 1-for-1 in the All-Star Game, which the National League lost 4-0. But the numbers don’t tell the whole story here. He’s batting .291 with 104 hits, 29 home runs, 53 RBIs and 63 runs scored this season. And he’s now a two-time All-Star at just 23 years old.
More than just a baseball player in Chicago
PCA has become a fixture at other Chicago sporting events, especially Bears games. After Chicago beat the Packers in the NFC Wild Card round, he was at Soldier Field leading a chant that every Bears fan knows by heart: “Bear down.”
He also sat next to Bears quarterback Caleb Williams at a Blackhawks game in January. The two have drawn comparisons for their swagger and confidence. It’s not hard to see why. Both guys carry themselves like they know something the rest of us don’t.
For a city that hasn’t had a ton to celebrate lately — the Bears are rebuilding, the Cubs are young and promising but not quite there yet — PCA is becoming the kind of athlete who makes sports fun again. He’s loud, he’s proud, and he’s not afraid to let everyone know he’s a fan first.
And honestly? Watching Devin Hester highlights is never a bad way to spend time. PCA gets that.
