Championship windows don’t stay open forever. The Chargers know this. They’ve got Justin Herbert in his prime, a roster that’s been aggressively rebuilt around him, and a front office that spent the offseason loading up at every position group. But even the deepest rosters have a guy who’s basically on the clock. For Los Angeles, that guy is Quentin Johnston.

Johnston enters 2026 with more pressure than anyone on the team. Possibly more than anyone in the building not named Herbert. The former first-round pick has shown flashes. Big plays, eight touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, steady improvement after a brutal rookie year. But the Chargers didn’t draft him 21st overall to be a solid complementary piece. They wanted a dynamic, defense-wrecking weapon. So far, that version of Johnston has been more theoretical than real.

McDaniel’s system is basically a custom fit

Here’s the thing that makes this season so important. Mike McDaniel runs an offense built on motion, formation tricks, and getting receivers the ball with space to operate. It’s basically designed for a guy like Johnston. At TCU, he was terrifying after the catch. Size, acceleration, open-field vision. He turned short throws into house calls. But in the NFL, he’s mostly been asked to win on the perimeter in traditional routes. That’s not his game. McDaniel changes the math. Expect crossing routes, quick screens, layered concepts that get the ball in his hands before defenders can square him up.

If Johnston can’t produce in this environment, that’s a real problem. Legitimate questions about his ceiling become unavoidable. The Chargers picked up his fifth-year option, so they’re not giving up yet. But options buy time, not patience.

Financial reality sets the stakes

There’s a business side to this too. If Johnston puts together a consistent season, extension talks become easy. If he doesn’t, the front office starts looking for alternatives. The Chargers have rebuilt the offensive line, added David Njoku, drafted speed at receiver, and fortified the defense. They’ve done everything they can to set this offense up for Herbert. Now one of the biggest investments has to deliver.

The spotlight is on Johnston. He’s got continuity at quarterback, a system built for his strengths, and a team that’s ready to win now. Very few receivers get a more favorable setup to break out. If he finally puts it all together, the Chargers could have one of the most explosive offenses in the AFC. If not, Los Angeles might have to face an uncomfortable question about whether its former first-round pick is part of the long-term plan.
