Manchester United’s Pursuit of Angelo Stiller Just Got a Lot More Complicated

If Manchester United wanted to pry Angelo Stiller out of Stuttgart this summer, they just missed their window. By about a day.

According to German outlet Sport Bild, the 25-year-old midfielder’s €36.5 million release clause expired on July 15. That’s roughly $40 million at current exchange rates. Which means Stuttgart now holds all the leverage in any negotiation for their star midfielder.

The timing is awkward for United. Club scouts watched Stiller multiple times last season. He fits the profile of a modern six who can dictate tempo and break lines with his passing. But with the clause gone, Stuttgart can name their price or simply say no.

Here’s the part that matters for Stuttgart fans: the club doesn’t have to panic about activating an internal buyout option on the clause either. That would have cost them around €3.5 million to trigger. Now they don’t need to spend a dime to keep control of his contract.

Stiller is under contract until 2028. So Stuttgart’s front office can sit tight, reject lowball offers, and wait. The player seems content to stay. There has been no public push from his camp for a move.

But this isn’t a permanent door slam on a transfer. Sport Bild reports that the release clause will reactivate in summer 2027. So interested clubs basically have a two-year break before they can try again at a fixed price. By then, Stiller will be 27 and likely in his prime. The fee might look like a bargain if he keeps developing.

Stiller earned his first Germany caps this past season and has become a central piece of Sebastian Hoeneß’s system at Stuttgart. He’s not a flashy player. He’s the kind of midfielder who makes everyone around him better by simply being where he needs to be. That’s exactly the type clubs like United tend to overpay for in a panic. Stuttgart just made sure they can’t do it cheaply.

For now, the ball is in Stuttgart’s court. And they seem perfectly happy to dribble out the clock.
