Manchester United Walked Away From Ederson After World Cup Physical. Now Atalanta Is Talking Extension.

Manchester United had a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The fee was agreed. The contracts were ready. Then the medical happened and everything fell apart.

According to multiple reports out of Italy, United pulled out of the €45 million transfer after Ederson returned from the 2026 World Cup with Brazil and underwent what the club called intensive testing. The issue was his knee. The medical staff apparently flagged something they couldn’t sign off on, and the club withdrew at the last minute.

Atalanta was stunned. Director of sport Cristiano Giuntoli said as much in a press conference. The deal had been in place for weeks. They thought it was done. Instead they got a phone call that changed the math on their entire summer.

Giuntoli’s exact words were that the club was surprised by the turn of events. That’s a diplomatic way of saying they didn’t see it coming. United didn’t just renegotiate or ask for a discount. They walked entirely.

The good news for Atalanta: Ederson is reportedly fine with staying. The club is working on a new contract. His current deal runs through next summer, so they had some leverage but not a ton. A player with one year left is a player whose price drops fast. That was reflected in the original asking price.

What Atalanta Is Getting (If He Stays)

Ederson is 27. Atalanta bought him for €22.9 million from Salernitana in 2022. He had only been in Italy for six months before that, arriving from Corinthians. Since joining Atalanta, he’s played 180 competitive games and scored 16 goals with 6 assists. Those aren’t flashy numbers for an attacker, but Ederson isn’t really an attacker. He’s a box-to-box midfielder who wins tackles, covers ground, and pops up with the occasional big goal.

He was part of the Atalanta squad that won the Europa League. He’s played in two Coppa Italia finals. That experience matters. Losing him for nothing next summer would hurt, but keeping him on a new deal changes the picture entirely.

United’s decision raises questions about what exactly they found and how serious it is. Neither club has disclosed specifics. But the fact that United was willing to spend €45 million and then walked away suggests it wasn’t a minor concern. Teams don’t do that over a tweak. They do that over something structural.

For now, Ederson remains an Atalanta player. The new contract talks are reportedly underway. If they get something done, this story becomes a footnote about a deal that almost happened. If they don’t, the January window gets interesting.
