Joel Embiid Showed Up to the MLB All-Star Game in Philly and the Town Loved It

Joel Embiid doesn’t exactly have a ton of free time during his offseason. The man is 32, coming off another season where his body forced him into load management hell, and he’s got a new co-star in Jaylen Brown to build chemistry with. But Tuesday night? He made time.

The Sixers star was spotted in the stands at Citizens Bank Park for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, casually watching the American League shut out the National League 4-0. NBC Sports Philadelphia caught him on camera looking relaxed, wearing a hat, just another fan in the building. Except he’s not just another fan. He’s maybe the most recognizable active athlete in the city right now.

Embiid has always been present at Philly sporting events. He’s shown up at Eagles games, he’s popped in at Phillies playoff runs. But this felt different. This was the Midsummer Classic, in his city, and he didn’t have to be there. He wanted to be there. That matters to a fan base that’s watched him rehab through everything from meniscus tears to orbital fractures.

The home team didn’t give him much to cheer for. Phillies stars Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Christopher Sanchez were all on the losing end. The NL couldn’t scratch across a single run. So Embiid sat there, probably thinking about how both teams in this town have a habit of getting close and then falling short. The Phillies lost the World Series in 2022. The Sixers haven’t made it past the second round since 2001.

But there’s optimism in the air. The Sixers front office, now led by Mike Gansey, made a splash by bringing in Jaylen Brown to pair with Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Brown finished sixth in MVP voting last season while basically carrying a depleted Celtics roster. He’s not just some guy. He’s a legit two-way star who should take some of the scoring load off Embiid during the regular season. Keep him fresh. Maybe even healthy.

Embiid has fallen off from his 2023 MVP peak. That’s not debate, that’s just what happens when your body racks up mileage and minutes. But Brown changes the math. The Sixers don’t need Embiid to be Superman for 82 games anymore. They need him to be Superman for 16 playoff wins.

Philly fans know that story. They’ve seen the Phillies tease them, get to the Fall Classic, lose. They’ve seen the Eagles win it all in 2025, so at least there’s that. But the hunger hasn’t gone away. And seeing Embiid sit there, watching baseball, being part of the city’s sports fabric on an off night? It’s a reminder that the obsession runs both ways.
