Miguel Vargas Just Sent a 433-Foot Message to the AL Central

Miguel Vargas did not come to Philadelphia to be a spectator. The White Sox third baseman entered the All-Star Game as a substitute in the third inning and spent the rest of the night reminding everyone how far he has climbed.

His moment came in the eighth. The American League led 3-0. Vargas worked the count, got something he could drive, and sent a 433-foot home run into the left-field seats. MLB posted the video instantly. The caption read: “Miguel Vargas cracks one 433 feet and gives the American League a commanding lead.”

It was his first All-Star appearance. It might not be his last.

The swing that turned a season around

Vargas does not arrive here by accident. Two years ago he was in the middle of a nightmare. The Dodgers traded him to Chicago in a three-team deal in July 2024, and Vargas hit .104 with a .387 OPS the rest of that season. It was ugly. He knew it. The White Sox knew it. But they held on.

What happened next is a textbook example of a player rebuilding himself. Vargas went into the offseason, reworked his approach, and came out hitting .245 with 21 homers, 59 RBIs, and an .848 OPS by the break. He added 11 stolen bases and played improved defense at third. That combination got him to the All-Star Game. The home run was just the exclamation point.

The White Sox entered the break tied with Cleveland atop the AL Central. A year ago nobody would have predicted that sentence. Vargas is a big reason why it’s true.

A franchise star in the making

Chicago has been through it the last few seasons. Rough years, losing streaks, roster turnover. Vargas is exactly the kind of player they need to emerge. Young, productive, steady. He doesn’t do the flashy thing every night, but he does the right thing often enough to win.

The home run in the All-Star Game was a national showcase for that transformation. One swing doesn’t define a career, but it does tell a story. Vargas walked into the Midsummer Classic as a fill-in and walked out as one of the night’s biggest highlights. The White Sox will take that every time.
