Leeds United officially confirmed Karl Darlow’s exit on Wednesday. The 35-year-old goalkeeper is headed to Manchester United, and the move makes a lot of sense for both sides.
The club put out a brief statement thanking Darlow for his role in their 2024/25 Championship title win and last season’s Premier League survival. They offered him a new deal, but he turned it down. The reason? Leeds couldn’t promise him the starting job.
Darlow spent three seasons at Elland Road after joining from Newcastle for just £400,000 in 2023. He started every season as the No. 2, but something kept happening. He’d wait, he’d stay ready, and eventually he’d get the nod. That happened in each of the last two campaigns.
In 2024/25, manager Daniel Farke benched Illan Meslier with seven games left and handed Darlow the gloves. Darlow started every one of those matches. Leeds won the Championship title and earned promotion. Last season, it was more of the same. He replaced new signing Lucas Perri in January and played the rest of the way. Twenty-two league appearances, five clean sheets, and one ridiculous save from Wolves’ Ladislav Krejci that won Premier League save of the month in April.
But here’s the thing. Darlow is 35 now. He’s looking at what’s probably his last chance at a big-money contract. Starting a fourth season as a backup wasn’t going to get him there. So he’s crossing Manchester to serve as cover for Senne Lammens instead. Manchester United wanted an upgrade on Altay Bayindir, and they’re getting a veteran who’s already proven he can step in when needed.
Leeds fans will remember him fondly. Thirty-eight appearances, 10 clean sheets, and a Championship medal. Not bad for a guy they picked up for pocket change. The club praised his character in the farewell statement, and that’s not just PR. Darlow never caused trouble when he wasn’t playing. He just waited for his turn and made it count.
Now he gets one more run at it, this time at Old Trafford. And if history’s any guide, he’ll probably end up playing more than anyone expects.
