Manchester United just dropped £35 million to trigger Youri Tielemans’ release clause at Aston Villa, and the Belgian midfielder is already signed through 2031. That’s a five-year deal for a 29-year-old who just captained Belgium at the World Cup this summer.
Michael Carrick is rebuilding his midfield one piece at a time, and Tielemans is the third addition of the window. Andrey Santos and goalkeeper Karl Darlow came in earlier. Tielemans is the headliner though.
What Tielemans brings to Old Trafford
Three seasons at Aston Villa. 134 appearances. A Europa League trophy where he scored the opening goal in the final against Freiburg. He also racked up seven assists in that campaign. Villa fans online are not happy about losing him, which tells you something. He’s not just a guy who filled a stat sheet. He was a key figure in their midfield rotation.
Before Villa, he won an FA Cup and Community Shield with Leicester City. That Leicester squad was something else. Tielemans was right in the middle of it, pulling strings from deep.
The international résumé
Ninety caps for Belgium. Captained the side at this summer’s World Cup, scored twice as they reached the quarterfinals. He’s not young anymore but he’s experienced in high-pressure environments. That matters for a United side trying to stay in the Champions League after clawing their way back in.
Where he fits
United needed a midfielder who can control tempo and isn’t afraid to shoot from range. Tielemans does both. Carrick’s system relies on having at least one guy who can shift play from side to side without losing momentum. Tielemans is that guy. He’s also durable, which is not nothing for a team that had injury problems last season.
The £35 million release clause is actually reasonable in this market. Villa paid nothing for him when he arrived from Leicester on a free, so they’re walking away with pure profit. United gets a proven Premier League midfielder without a bidding war. Clean deal for both sides.
He’ll wear No. 8, according to the club’s website. No official word on when he’ll be introduced at Old Trafford but sources close to the deal say it’ll happen before the weekend. United opens the season against Brighton in three weeks.
