Manchester United just dropped £35 million on Youri Tielemans, and they’re not done yet. Not even close.
The Belgian midfielder triggered his release clause at Aston Villa and is already partway through his medical. He could be officially announced before the weekend. But here’s the thing that’ll get United fans talking: manager Michael Carrick still wants three more bodies through the door before the window closes.
Three more targets, one clear problem
According to reports out of England, the club is hunting for a third midfielder, a left winger, and a pure No. 9. That’s a lot of shopping for a team that’s already added Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos and Welsh keeper Karl Darlow this week alone.
The midfielder chase took a hit when a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson fell apart. Carrick is still pushing for someone in that spot though, and Manuel Ugarte is expected to be available for the full season — which helps, but doesn’t solve the depth issue entirely.
Tielemans came out of nowhere for most people. That deal wasn’t on anyone’s radar until it basically was. And United might have more surprises up their sleeve. The front office seems willing to move fast when they see an opening.
Rashford’s exit and the winger question
Marcus Rashford is expected to be sold this summer. That’s not a rumor anymore, that’s basically a done deal in all but paperwork. So a replacement winger is very much on the table.
West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville has been mentioned as a target. But honestly, if history is any guide, United fans should probably expect a name nobody’s talking about yet. The club has a habit of zigging when everyone expects them to zag.
At striker, Benjamin Sesko needs cover and real competition. A few names have floated to the surface: Brighton’s Danny Welbeck (yes, the old face), Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney, and Brentford’s Igor Thiago. Any of those guys would give Carrick a different option up top.
Three signings done. Three more wanted. That’s six new players in one window if everything breaks right. For a team heading back to the Champions League, that kind of roster overhaul might be exactly what they need to avoid getting embarrassed on the big stage again.
