Aston Villa Just Jumped Into the Manu Kone Sweepstakes and the Price Tag Is Steep

The Manu Kone transfer saga just got a lot more interesting. Aston Villa has entered the race for the AS Roma midfielder, and now two Premier League sides are circling the 25-year-old French international.

Kone had a monster season in Serie A last year. Then he turned heads at the World Cup with France. Gian Piero Gasperini recently called him out, saying Kone is “having a great World Cup.” That kind of praise tends to push a player’s price tag up fast.

According to AS Roma Live, Villa is now in the mix. That makes sense if you look at their roster situation. Youri Tielemans is headed to Manchester United, so Villa needs a replacement in midfield. Meanwhile, United themselves are looking for someone to replace Casemiro, who has slowed down and can’t cover the ground he used to. Both teams want more physicality and defensive bite in the middle of the park.

What Kone Brings to the Table

Kone is not flashy. He’s the kind of midfielder who wins the ball back, keeps possession simple, and lets the creative players do their thing. He’s got the frame to handle the Premier League’s physical demands. And he’s proven he can adapt — he played in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach and then in Italy with Roma. That’s two different leagues, two different styles, and he looked good in both.

The reported asking price is around €50 million. That’s a lot for a player who isn’t a goal scorer or a highlight-reel passer. But in today’s market, a proven international midfielder at his peak doesn’t come cheap. Both clubs are hoping to negotiate that number down, but Roma doesn’t have much reason to sell cheap. Kone still has years left on his contract and the club knows there’s interest.

The Champions League factor matters too. Both United and Villa can offer him that stage next season. For a player who has never played in England, the chance to test himself at the highest level in the Premier League is a real draw.

It’s not clear which club is in a better position to get this done. United has deeper pockets but also more needs to fill across the squad. Villa has been aggressive in the market under Unai Emery and might see Kone as the piece that solidifies their midfield for a Champions League push.

Either way, Kone is at the right age and the right moment in his career to make this move. The Premier League has a way of chewing up midfielders who aren’t ready for the pace. But everything about his game suggests he’s ready for it.
