The Kansas City Chiefs locked up linebacker Nick Bolton with a three-year, $45 million extension this offseason. That was the business part. Now comes the respect part.

ESPN’s annual position rankings, based on surveys of over 70 NFL execs, coaches and scouts, slotted Bolton at No. 8 among off-ball linebackers. The feedback was telling. Evaluators pointed to his instincts and durability. They noted that even during a down year for Kansas City’s defense, Bolton still racked up 10-plus tackles for loss for the second straight season.

But here’s what really stands out. Multiple analysts are drawing comparisons to Fred Warner, the San Francisco 49ers’ All-Pro linebacker who’s basically the gold standard at the position. They see Bolton as a field general, a guy who gets everyone lined up right and makes the defense function. Under Steve Spagnuolo last season, Bolton logged 23 snaps as a slot cornerback and even 4 snaps at safety. That’s versatility you don’t see from every linebacker.

One AFC executive summed it up this way: “He’s got instincts, toughness and production. His long speed in coverage is just average, which caps him a little bit.” That’s the honest scouting take. Bolton is a hammer, not a scalpel, and the league sees it clearly.

Meanwhile, Bolton got another piece of good news. He was officially named to the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2026, as reported by Brett McMurphy. He’ll go in alongside former Tigers quarterback Drew Lock. Bolton said the recognition means a lot, considering how the region from Columbia to Kansas City has always felt like home.

The timing of all this matters. The Chiefs are coming off a season where the defense dealt with major injuries and the team hasn’t been to the Super Bowl in a minute by their standards. Bolting down Bolton gives them a cornerstone in the middle of the defense.

On the other side of the ball, there’s some optimism brewing. According to Jesse Newell at The Athletic, wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been the team’s clear “Summer MVP.” He’s building chemistry with Patrick Mahomes in workouts, and early returns look promising. If Worthy can stretch the field the way the Chiefs hoped when they traded up for him, this offense might look a lot different in 2026.

But for now, the story is Bolton. A big contract, a Hall of Fame nod from his college and comparisons to one of the best to ever do it. Not a bad offseason.
