United’s Midfield Overhaul Isn’t Done. Joao Gomes Could Be Next in the Door.

Manchester United’s summer shopping in the middle of the park might not be finished yet. They’ve already got Andrey Santos in the building and Youri Tielemans is reportedly close behind. But it sounds like the club is still looking, and the next name on the list is a familiar one.

Wolves’ Joao Gomes is the guy. According to Football Insider, United are preparing another run at the Brazilian midfielder. He’s been on their radar for a while, and now that Wolves got relegated from the Premier League, he might actually be gettable at a reasonable price.

Gomes is 25 and entering his prime. He’s already got Premier League experience, which matters when you’re trying to plug a hole in the middle of the pitch. The guy plays with an edge. He’s aggressive, he wins the ball back, and he doesn’t get pushed around. That’s something United’s midfield has lacked for years.

Tielemans, if that deal goes through, is a different kind of player. More of a passer, more creative. The Guardian says United are in advanced talks with Aston Villa and are ready to trigger his £35 million release clause. Santos, coming from Chelsea, is more of a box-to-box guy with upside. Throw Gomes into that mix and you’ve got a pretty balanced group.

But here’s the thing. United has to figure out how all these guys fit together. You can’t just stack midfielders and hope it works. Each one needs a clear role. If Gomes is coming in as the enforcer, Tielemans as the distributor, and Santos as the energy guy who gets forward, that makes sense on paper. But the manager has to actually make it work in games.

The opportunity is there because of Wolves’ relegation. Gomes is too good for the Championship and he knows it. United might be able to get him without paying a premium, which leaves budget for other positions. Because let’s be real, this team still needs help in other spots too.

Gomes would bring the kind of defensive bite that lets other players do their thing. He’s not a guy who’s going to spray 50-yard passes or score screamers from outside the box. What he does is break up play, cover ground, and make life miserable for the other team. That’s valuable in a league where every game has stretches where you just need to stop the other team from playing.

United’s midfield rebuild was always going to be a big focus this summer. It’s been a weak spot for a while. If they get this right — and bring in Gomes alongside the other two — they might finally have a group that can compete with the top teams in the league. But it’s one thing to buy the pieces. It’s another to get them to play together. That’s the part nobody’s talking about yet.
