Youri Tielemans is suddenly on the verge of becoming a Manchester United player. And yeah, this one basically came from nowhere.
According to The Athletic, the 29-year-old Belgian midfielder is in advanced talks with United, and he wants the move. Aston Villa would trigger his £35 million release clause, which means they’d actually book a profit on a guy they signed for free two summers ago. Not a bad bit of business if it goes through.
Tielemans joined Villa in 2023 after his contract ran out at Leicester. He’s been a steady presence under Unai Emery, making 134 appearances and helping the club qualify for the Champions League. Oh, and they won the Europa League last season too. He’s got a pretty nice medal collection going.
Leicester fans still remember him best for that FA Cup final goal against Chelsea. One of those moments that just sticks.
The real surprise here is that United are even in the conversation. Their midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick already landed Andrey Santos this summer, and they’d been chasing Atalanta’s Ederson for a while. That deal is dead now. Tielemans is the guy instead.
Villa aren’t sitting still either. They’re expected to bring in Swiss international Johan Manzambi after his strong World Cup showing. So if Tielemans leaves, they’ve got a replacement lined up.
Personal terms aren’t expected to be a problem. The hold-up, if there is one, is probably just paperwork and medical slots. But this one feels close.
For United, it’s a move that makes sense if you think about experience. Tielemans has played in big games. He’s been around. He’s not the flashy young prospect type, but Carrick seems to value a guy who can control a game and not panic with the ball. That’s Tielemans.
And with United back in the Champions League next season, they need depth. They need players who’ve been there before. Tielemans fits that description better than most on the market right now.
Nothing is signed yet. But the noise is loud and it’s getting louder.
