Jules Koundé has heard the pitch from Bayern Munich. He’s just not interested.
The Barcelona defender, fresh off a standout World Cup performance for France, has been identified by the German champions as their top target to reinforce Vincent Kompany’s backline. Bayern’s brass did their homework. They checked in with Koundé’s camp recently to get a feel for his contract situation and his mindset heading into the summer window.
The answer they got back was pretty clear.
According to reports from Diario Sport, the 27-year-old’s priority remains staying at Barcelona. He doesn’t see himself packing his bags for Bavaria. Not this year.
That’s a blow for Bayern, who saw Koundé as the kind of versatile defender who could slot in at center-back or right-back depending on what Kompany needs. The former Sevilla man has that ability to shift across the backline without dropping off. And his form at this summer’s World Cup only made him more appealing. Bayern’s scouts noticed. So did the front office.
But here’s the thing. Koundé seems settled at Camp Nou. He’s not one of those players angling for a move every time a big club comes calling. The people close to him say his head isn’t being turned by the interest from Munich. He wants to keep building what he’s started in Catalonia.
Barcelona’s financial situation is still a mess. Everybody knows that. The club has had to get creative just to register players in recent windows. But Koundé apparently isn’t looking at that as a reason to jump ship. He’s bought in. Or at least he’s not ready to walk away yet.
Bayern might need to pivot. They still need defensive help. Kompany’s squad looked thin at times last season, and the club has been aggressive in trying to fill gaps. Koundé was their guy. Now they’ve got to figure out Plan B.
For Barcelona, keeping Koundé is a win. Not just because he’s a good player. But because it sends a message that even in the middle of all the noise about finances and registrations and La Liga’s salary cap, they can still hold onto someone a club like Bayern wants.
Whether that holds when another big offer comes next summer is a question for later. Right now, Koundé is staying put.
