Manchester United Walk Away From £38M Ederson Deal After Medical Flags Issue

Manchester United pulled the plug on a £38 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after his medical exam revealed something that gave the club pause. The Brazilian had already completed his full physical and was waiting for the deal to go through. Then it didn’t.

According to Sky Sports, United agreed to the fee with Atalanta and had personal terms locked in with the 27-year-old. But after the medical, the club decided not to proceed. That’s a brutal swing for a player who was this close to joining one of the biggest clubs in the world.

What went wrong

The report says United are sympathetic to Ederson and his family, given how late in the process the deal collapsed. It’s not clear exactly what the medical flagged — that kind of detail rarely leaks — but it was enough for the club to hit pause. They haven’t closed the door completely though. Sky Sports suggests United could come back for Ederson later in the window, depending on how the rest of their summer business shakes out.

That’s cold comfort for the player right now. You don’t go through a full medical, agree to terms, and then shrug off a failed transfer like it’s nothing. Ederson has been a key piece for Atalanta, and he’s good enough to draw interest elsewhere. But this one stings.

What United has already done

Manchester United have already brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and are close to wrapping up a deal for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. That’s two midfielders added to a room that needed fresh legs. Santos brings energy and ball progression. Tielemans gives them composure and passing range. Both are good players.

But neither is a pure defensive midfielder. That’s the gap that still exists in this squad. United need someone who can sit in front of the back four, break up plays, and let the attackers do their thing. Ederson can help at both ends — he’s not just a destroyer — but he’s not a specialist in that role either. So walking away from him might actually make sense if United have a different profile in mind.

The question is whether they’ll actually go find that player. They’ve got a few weeks left. The window isn’t closing tomorrow. But the clock is ticking.
