Atalanta Throws Ederson a Lifeline After Manchester United Deal Falls Apart

Manchester United’s summer hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. They missed on Aurelien Tchouameni. Elliot Anderson slipped away. Mateus Fernandes? Also no. So when word got out that they’d finally locked down a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson back in June, it felt like a win. A rare win.

Turns out, maybe not.

The Red Devils had agreed on a fee with the Serie A club before the World Cup. Ederson even got a late call-up to Brazil’s squad and completed part of his medical in North America. Then things went sideways. Sources say United’s medical staff flagged concerns about his knees. Not ideal when you’re about to drop serious money on a 27-year-old.

What Happened With the Medical?

United has denied the deal is off the table, but pretty much everyone else in the reporting world — including Fabrizio Romano — has treated it as dead. Romano says Ederson is gutted. His dream move vanished over a medical issue he believes is nothing. Atalanta backs him. They say he’s 100 percent fit. The whole thing feels messy.

Here’s where it gets interesting for the player. Ederson has just 10 months left on his current contract. That’s a problem. He’s also stuck with the reputation of having a failed medical attached to his name, which is one of those things that can follow a guy around even when it’s not fair.

But Atalanta isn’t letting him twist in the wind.

New Contract Offer on the Table

According to Romano, the club has offered Ederson a five-year extension starting next week. The ball is in his court. He can sign it and stay put or keep testing the market with less than a year left on his deal. That’s a real decision. Stick with the team that trusts you or roll the dice somewhere else.

Atalanta clearly wants him around. Offers like that don’t get made to players they think are damaged goods. The extension is basically a public statement: we don’t care what Man United’s doctors said, we believe in this guy.

Ederson has been a key piece for Atalanta since arriving in 2022. His energy in midfield and ability to break up play made him one of the more underrated defensive midfielders in Italy. United saw that. Others probably did too. The question now is whether another club will come in before the window closes, or if Ederson takes the extension and bets on himself for another year.

For now, he’s in a weird spot. One club says his knee is fine. Another backed out because of it. The Player has to figure out what comes next, and he doesn’t have much time to decide.
