The Dallas Mavericks had about as rough a year as a franchise can have. Kyrie Irving went down with an ACL tear. Luka Dončić got traded. The whole thing felt like a teardown that nobody asked for. But now, with a clean-ish slate and a new face of the franchise in rookie Cooper Flagg, the vibes are shifting.
Flagg and Irving were spotted together at Summer League, sitting courtside, talking through possessions, laughing at something between quarters. It’s early, obviously, but the two have been putting in time together off the court too. For a team that needs its stars to actually like playing with each other, that matters.
And here’s where it gets interesting. NBA insider Chris Haynes went on DLLS Sports and hinted that Dallas might not be finished making moves. Masai is very open to doing things, but he won’t make a change just to make a change,
Haynes said. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dallas Mavericks have something left up their sleeve.
That’s a quote that’ll get fans talking, especially with Masai Ujiri still holding onto assets in Toronto and the Mavs clearly trying to reload on the fly. Dallas has already added some younger pieces this offseason, but they could use more guard help. They had interest in Anfernee Simons before he signed with Philly, so the front office is clearly poking around the perimeter.
Forward depth is another area they might address. They already have bodies there, but one guy making a case is Morez Johnson Jr. The rookie put up 27 points, eight boards, three steals and two blocks in his Summer League debut. That’s not a quiet night. That’s a statement.
The Mavs were also reportedly in the mix for Kawhi Leonard before the Clippers shipped him to Toronto. Nothing materialized, but the fact that they kicked the tires says a lot. Ujiri might want to make a splash of his own, and the rumor mill is gonna stay hot until something actually happens.
For now, the story is Flagg and Irving. Two guys at very different points in their careers, trying to figure out if this thing can work. The early signs are promising. And if the front office has another trick up its sleeve, Dallas could look a lot different by training camp.
