British Airways and Norwegian Air Made a World Cup Bet. The Loser Had to Change Its Name.

You know how corporate social media accounts sometimes get a little too friendly? This time it went full chaos.

Before England played Norway in the World Cup quarterfinals last Saturday, British Airways and Norwegian Air started jawing at each other on Instagram. It was playful at first. Then Norwegian Air threw down: if Norway won, British Airways had to swap its Instagram logo for Norwegian’s for a day. And if England won, Norwegian would do the same.

British Airways replied with a smirk: “Don’t make bets you can’t win.”

Well. Jude Bellingham happened. England won. And Norwegian Air did not weasel out.

For a full 24 hours starting Sunday, Norwegian Air changed its Instagram profile name and logo to read “British Airways” — basically admitting defeat in front of the entire internet. It’s the kind of bit that either looks like good sportsmanship or a marketing stunt, and honestly, it’s both.

How the Bet Worked

The original Instagram exchange was straightforward. Norwegian Air posted: “Hey, British Airways, want to make a bet? If Norway win, you’ll have to change your Instagram logo to ours on Sunday for one day. And vice versa. Deal?”

British Airways bit. The whole thing was set up like a playground dare, but with a 737-sized audience. Norwegian Air did not back down after the loss. They flipped their branding, took the L publicly, and the internet ate it up.

It’s not every day you see an airline voluntarily rebrand to its competitor, even temporarily. The move got thousands of likes and comments, most of them laughing at the loser — which is exactly the point.

What’s Next in the Tournament

England moves on to face Argentina in the semifinals on Wednesday. France and Spain square off Tuesday. The final is next Sunday. You have to wonder if any other airlines are watching this and thinking about making similar bets. Ryanair versus someone, maybe? Probably for the best that nobody tries it.
