The Indiana Fever got their star guard back earlier this week, but they didn’t push it. Caitlin Clark returned from injury against the Phoenix Mercury and was available for that game, but the Fever held her out of the second night of a back-to-back set. That raised some eyebrows. Fans wanted to know: Is she good to go against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces?
Turns out, yes. But with a catch.
Head coach Stephanie White confirmed before the Mercury game that Clark would play against Vegas on Friday. She also made it clear there’s a limit on how much we’ll see her.
“Caitlin Clark is going to be available (vs Las Vegas). She’s going to be on a minutes restriction, around 20 to 25. So we’ll see what that looks like. But she will be available and able to play. Still with a minutes restriction,” White said.
So Clark is active, but she’s not going to log her usual 35-plus minutes. That’s the kind of cautious approach you’d expect this early in a return from injury, especially for a player who means as much to this team as Clark does. Indiana is still figuring out its rotation and chemistry, and having their lead guard on the floor — even in short bursts — is better than not having her at all.
The Aces are no joke. They’re the two-time defending champs for a reason, and they’ve got depth and experience that the Fever are still chasing. But with Clark on the floor for 20 to 25 minutes, Indiana gets a jolt of offensive creativity and floor-spacing that could make things interesting. The question is whether that’s enough time to build a lead or close a gap against a team like Vegas.
Fans online have been watching Clark’s minutes closely all season, and this restriction isn’t going to quiet the chatter. Some are relieved she’s playing at all. Others are already wondering when the training wheels come off. For now, the Fever are playing the long game. They’d rather have Clark at 80 percent for 20 minutes than risk losing her for a longer stretch.
Tip-off is tonight. We’ll see how White manages the rotation and whether Clark looks like herself in the minutes she gets. More updates as they come.
