Tyler Herro has never been shy about letting people know he’s confident. But around the league, that confidence is starting to read a different way.
According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Kelly Iko, players and coaches who have matched up against the 26-year-old guard describe him as cocky — the kind of guy who talks trash constantly and acts like he wants to fight. One anonymous source put it bluntly: “Same boring tough-guy s**t.”
That reputation isn’t new, but it’s getting more attention now after a wild few weeks for Herro. He was just traded from Miami to Milwaukee as part of the package that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Heat. Before that, reports surfaced that Herro’s former teammate Bam Adebayo punched him during Summer League in Vegas. The alleged incident came after Herro posted an Instagram graphic showing Adebayo as one of the league’s least efficient midrange shooters.
The Heat breakup wasn’t pretty
Herro missed most of last season with an injury. When he finally returned, the Heat were already fading. They lost their first play-in game to Charlotte, and it became obvious the roster needed a shake-up. Pat Riley did exactly that, shipping Herro and several younger players to the Bucks for Antetokounmpo.
Publicly, Herro has said all the right things about loving Miami. But the Adebayo situation suggests there was some real tension under the surface. Teammates for years in Miami, the two never showed any obvious animosity during games or in the locker room. That might have changed behind closed doors.
What comes next?
The Heat and Bucks will meet at least twice next season. Those games are going to be must-watch TV now. Herro vs. his old team. Herro vs. Adebayo. And a whole lot of chatter on the court.
Whether Herro leans into the villain role or tries to tone things down in Milwaukee is anyone’s guess. But if the quotes from around the league are any indication, opponents are already tired of his act — and they’ll be ready to let him hear it.
