Arsenal and Man United Are Chasing the Same Midfielder. Here’s Why That’s Interesting.

Manchester United have already reached out to Manu Koné’s representatives, according to reports out of Italy. The Red Devils need a midfielder who can actually win a duel in the center of the park, and Koné fits that profile better than most options on the table right now.

Roma is reportedly open to selling the 25-year-old for around €50 million. That’s not pocket change, but it’s also not absurd for a guy entering his prime who’s already shown he can handle big games. Koné just played well against Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals. He’s been doing this at a high level for a while now.

The French international spent years in Germany before moving to Serie A, and the physical qualities that made him stand out at Borussia Mönchengladbach are still there. He’s strong, he reads the game well, and he can carry the ball forward when there’s space. Those are all traits that translate to the Premier League.

United haven’t exactly been dominant in midfield this season. They could use some bite, some actual physical presence to break up attacks and cover ground. Koné offers that. The asking price might give them pause, but he’s not some project player. He’s ready to play right now.

What about Arsenal?

Arsenal are also keeping tabs on Koné’s situation. They need an upgrade over Christian Nørgaard, and the French midfielder would be a clear step up. The Gunners have been quietly monitoring his progress at Roma, and the World Cup only reinforced what scouts already knew.

Koné is represented by Excellence Sport Nation, the same agency that handles Bryan Mbeumo. That matters because Manchester United already have a working relationship with that agency. It’s not a done deal by any stretch, but it gives them a slight advantage if things get serious.

The player himself is looking for a big move this summer. Playing for either Manchester United or Arsenal is the kind of opportunity that’s hard to turn down. Both clubs can offer Champions League football. Both can offer a significant wage bump.

The question is whether either club actually pays the €50 million. United have the money, but they also have other positions they need to fill. Arsenal have been more careful with spending in recent windows. A bidding war would push the price up, and neither team wants that.

For now, it’s a waiting game with a lot of behind-the-scenes chatter. Koné will be one to watch as the summer window opens. It wouldn’t be surprising if more clubs try to get in the mix before this is over.
