22 Years Since a Player Did This. A 35-Year-Old Goalkeeper Is About to Change That.

Karl Darlow is about to do something no Leeds United player has done in over two decades. He’s heading to Manchester United on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper’s contract at Elland Road expired at the end of June and he turned down an extension offer, according to reports from the Yorkshire Evening Post. Darlow is now expected to sign with United as a free agent, making him just the seventh player in history to make the direct jump from Leeds to Manchester United.

The last guy to pull that off was Alan Smith back in 2004. That one stung Leeds fans badly, because Smith grew up a Leeds supporter and came through their academy. His £7 million move across the Pennines was seen as a betrayal by a lot of the fanbase. Darlow’s situation is different. He’s 35, he’s a goalkeeper, and he’s not a homegrown academy product. But the rarity of the move still stands out.

Why This Transfer Feels Different

Direct transfers between Leeds and Manchester United are genuinely uncommon. They’ve happened, but it’s not like these two are swapping players every summer. Seventeen players have moved between the clubs in total, but only six had gone from Leeds to United before Darlow. The opposite direction is a little more common but still rare. Daniel James went from United to Leeds in 2021 for £25 million, and that was a big deal at the time.

Darlow’s move isn’t going to generate the same kind of outrage Smith’s did. For one, he’s a veteran who spent most of his career at Newcastle before joining Leeds. He’s not a Leeds lad leaving the club he loves. He’s a professional making a late-career move to a club that needs goalkeeper depth.

And Manchester United does need that. With Andre Onana as the clear No. 1 and Altay Bayindir as backup, Darlow would slot in as a veteran presence who can step in if needed. He’s not expected to start. He’s expected to be a reliable third option and a mentor in the locker room.

It’s a smart piece of business for United. Free transfer, low risk, experienced Premier League goalkeeper who knows the league and won’t complain about playing time. For Darlow, it’s a chance to end his career at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

The move hasn’t been officially announced yet, but multiple reports say it’s close. If it goes through, Darlow will end a 22-year wait for the next Leeds-to-United transfer. Not bad for a guy who turns 36 in October.
