Garnacho’s Chelsea exit sets Man United up for a sell-on payday

Alejandro Garnacho’s time at Chelsea is over after just one season, and Manchester United is about to cash in on the move they made last summer.

The Blues have placed the winger on the market, and according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, they’ve set two different asking prices depending on where the buyer comes from. For clubs outside England, the number is €50 million. For Premier League teams, it’s £45 million.

That €50 million figure translates to roughly £42.6 million at current exchange rates. And here’s where it gets interesting for United: they inserted a 10 percent sell-on clause when they sold Garnacho to Chelsea for £40 million last summer.

So if Chelsea finds an overseas buyer at full price, United pockets about £4.26 million. If a Premier League club steps up and pays £45 million, United gets £4.5 million. Not bad for a player they already moved on from.

Garnacho himself is ready to move on. Romano reported that the Argentina international is open to leaving Chelsea permanently and has accepted that his stint in west London didn’t work out. He’s not training under head coach Xabi Alonso as Chelsea works with his camp to find a solution.

AS Roma has shown interest, but there’s a catch. Roma wants an initial loan. Chelsea is insisting on a permanent deal. Garnacho would reportedly be keen on a move to Serie A, so that one could go down to the wire depending on whether Roma adjusts its approach.

Napoli could circle back

Napoli is another name in the mix. The Italian side tried to sign Garnacho back in January 2025 while he was still at United. They were reportedly willing to pay around £40 million then, according to the BBC. That’s not far off the current €50 million asking price for overseas clubs.

It’s worth remembering that Chelsea and United just finished another piece of business this week. Andrey Santos moved from Chelsea to Old Trafford for £48 million plus £2 million in add-ons. The Brazilian passed his medical Thursday and signed his contract Friday.

That deal and this Garnacho situation mean the two clubs have been talking a lot lately. For United, the Garnacho sell-on clause is basically found money at this point. A player they decided to sell for £40 million is now bringing in another few million just from the next transaction.

Where Garnacho ends up remains to be seen. Roma wants him on loan. Napoli might be willing to buy. A Premier League club could swoop in. But no matter which direction this goes, United’s accounting department is already penciling in that check.
