Karl Darlow Picks Manchester United. Leeds Just Lost Their Goalkeeper Plan.

Karl Darlow is swapping Elland Road for Old Trafford. The 35-year-old goalkeeper is on the verge of signing with Manchester United as a free agent, according to The Athletic, with the deal described as advanced. That leaves Leeds United scrambling for a new No. 1 just weeks before the season starts.

Darlow spent last season as Leeds’ first choice after Lucas Perri got benched following a rough patch that included errors against United and Newcastle back in January. Darlow took over and made 22 Premier League starts, keeping five of the club’s eight clean sheets. He even had that night at Old Trafford in April where Leeds won 2-1. Funny how things work out. Now he could be walking into the same building as a backup.

United already have Senne Lammens locked in as the starter after his £18 million move from Royal Antwerp last season. Lammens impressed enough that the club clearly views him as the guy going forward. Altay Bayindir, the Turkish keeper who’s been the backup, is expected to leave this summer. So they needed an experienced No. 2 who won’t complain about sitting. Darlow fits that perfectly. Homegrown, Premier League pedigree, and old enough to know the drill.

Leeds, meanwhile, are in a bind. They held talks with Darlow about an extension but couldn’t get it done. Now they’ve lost him, and they’ve also lost Illan Meslier to Arsenal. That leaves Daniel Farke with exactly one senior goalkeeper on the roster: Lucas Perri, the same guy they benched six months ago. They need at least one addition this summer, and probably not a cheap one either.

Everton also made a run at Darlow, but it looks like United won that battle. For a free agent with experience at this level, the interest was always going to be strong. Darlow had options, and he made his choice. It just happens to be the one that hurts Leeds most.

Leeds might have to pivot fast. The transfer window is open, sure, but finding a reliable keeper who can step into the Premier League and start immediately isn’t easy. Especially when teams know you’re desperate. That’s the spot Farke is in now.
