Charles Barkley isn’t holding back on where LeBron James should finish his career. And he’s not exactly subtle about it.
Speaking on ESPN this week, Barkley made it clear that there’s only one team that makes sense for James as he heads into what could be his final season. That team is the Cleveland Cavaliers, the franchise that drafted him and where he delivered the city its first NBA championship.
“The only rightful farewell tour would be with the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Barkley said. “If LeBron goes to Golden State or Philadelphia it’s like he’s trying to cheat his way to a championship.”
That’s a pretty direct shot at the idea of James joining the Warriors or the 76ers. Barkley is essentially saying that riding coattails elsewhere would tarnish the ending of one of the greatest careers in NBA history. And knowing Barkley, he meant every word.
James opted out of his deal with the Lakers after eight seasons in Los Angeles. He’s an unrestricted free agent now, and at 41 years old, he’s still producing at a high level. This past season he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games. In the playoffs, those numbers bumped up to 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds per game. Not bad for a guy who’s been in the league since 2003.
The Cavaliers option and what it means
Cleveland just wrapped up a 52-win season and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. They beat Toronto and Detroit in seven-game series before getting swept by the Knicks. The roster has young talent and some pieces that could fit around James, but it’s not a finished product. They’d need to make moves to become a real contender.
Still, there’s something poetic about James returning to Ohio for one last ride. It would be his third stint with the franchise, and it would let him finish where it all started. Cleveland fans would absolutely lose their minds.
LeBron has multiple suitors. The Heat, the Warriors, the 76ers, the Cavs. He wants to be on a title contender, and that’s narrowing the list. But Barkley’s point is that not all contenders are created equal when it comes to legacy.
No one knows what James will actually do. But if Barkley’s opinion carries any weight in the locker room, Cavs fans might have reason to dream.
