Manchester United’s Midfield Plan Collapses. Now a 22-Year-Old Wants Out of Brighton.

Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild just hit a serious snag. The Ederson deal is dead after the Atalanta midfielder failed his medical, and now the club is scrambling. Again.

That puts Michael Carrick back in the market for not one but two midfielders. And the name that keeps floating to the surface is Carlos Baleba, the 22-year-old Cameroonian who Brighton has been reluctant to let go for anything less than a king’s ransom.

What Happened With Ederson

United thought they had the midfield locked down early. They wrapped up Andrey Santos quickly after missing out on Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes. Ederson was supposed to be the final piece. Instead, he flunked his physical and the deal fell apart. Now Carrick needs reinforcements from scratch.

INEOS is reportedly looking at Premier League-proven options again, and Baleba fits the profile. The only reason he’s not already at Old Trafford is Brighton’s asking price. Last summer, United valued him at roughly $95 million. That number hasn’t come down much despite Baleba’s inconsistent season.

Galatasaray Is Pushing Hard

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Galatasaray is preparing an offer around $55 million for the midfielder. That’s real money, but Brighton isn’t budging. The Seagulls see Baleba as a long-term asset, and they’re not in a hurry to sell.

Here’s the twist: Baleba wants out. Sources suggest he’s ready to head to Istanbul if the clubs can agree on a fee. Galatasaray’s management has been in active talks with Brighton, trying to find a number that works for both sides. The key advantage for the Turkish club is that the player is genuinely interested. He’s not just using them as leverage.

Whether that’s a pressure play to force United into a bidding war is unclear. But it’s a real possibility. United has the cash and the need. Brighton has the player and the leverage.

What United Might Do Next

If United really wants Baleba, they’ll have to top any Galatasaray offer. The question is whether INEOS is willing to go that high after already spending on Santos and missing on Ederson. Last summer they were ready to pay around $95 million. This summer the price might be lower if Brighton feels the market cooling. But not much lower.

Baleba is young, athletic, and already knows the Premier League. That’s exactly the kind of profile United has been targeting. But Brighton doesn’t sell cheap. Not to rivals. Not to anyone.

For now, the ball is in United’s court. They can either match or beat Galatasaray’s offer, or watch another target slip away while their midfield stays thin. Carrick doesn’t have the luxury of waiting much longer.
