Manchester United Walks Away From €45 Million Ederson Deal With Atalanta

Manchester United pulled the plug on a €45 million transfer for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to multiple reports on Friday night. The deal, which had been agreed in principle back in June, fell apart after the Brazilian international returned from the 2026 World Cup.

United had structured the offer with €40.5 million guaranteed plus another €4.5 million in performance bonuses. But the transfer was never formally finalized because Ederson was with Brazil’s national team in the United States for the World Cup. Once Brazil was eliminated, United requested extra intensive medical tests before signing off. Those exams were completed within the last 48 hours. Then came the about-face.

Sky Sport Italia, Fabrizio Romano and others all reported that Manchester United informed Atalanta they were pulling out entirely. Atalanta is not buying the injury excuse, though. The Italian club pointed out that if Ederson had a serious medical issue, he wouldn’t have been on Brazil’s World Cup roster. They believe United simply changed their minds.

Atalanta confident Ederson is healthy

La Dea is standing firm that the medicals didn’t flag anything worrying. Their reasoning is straightforward: you don’t take a player with a major injury to a World Cup. Ederson made the squad and even saw minutes for Brazil in the tournament. That doesn’t add up if something was wrong.

Atalanta’s position now is that Ederson could still be sold elsewhere before the summer window closes. Or he could stay and play under new head coach Maurizio Sarri. His contract runs through June 2028, so there’s no immediate pressure to move him at a discount.

Manchester United hasn’t publicly commented on why they backed out. The club is in the middle of a roster overhaul and has been linked with multiple midfield targets this summer. It’s possible they found a different player they like more, or the financial terms shifted after the World Cup break.

What happens next for Ederson

Ederson was a key piece for Atalanta last season, playing in 35 Serie A matches and chipping in with six goals and two assists. He’s 25, physical, and versatile enough to play both defensive and box-to-box midfield roles. Those traits made him attractive to United in the first place. And they’ll make him attractive to other clubs now.

Atalanta has a track record of selling players for good money. They’re not going to lowball themselves just because one deal fell through. If Ederson does leave, it’ll be on their terms. And if he stays, Sarri gets a proven Serie A midfielder who already knows the league.

For now, the whole thing just kind of fizzled out. No dramatic press release. No agent rant. Just a deal that existed one month and disappeared the next.
