Redshirting in College Football 27 isn’t just a button you press. It’s a decision that can shape your program for years. In Dynasty mode, you’re managing a roster full of teenagers who might need time to develop. In Road to Glory, you’re the player hoping for a fifth year to climb the depth chart. Either way, the system works the same: limited snaps mean an extra season.
Here’s the thing. You can only redshirt a player once. And only if they appear in four games or fewer. Freshmen who hit that four-game threshold automatically get redshirted, no manual work required. That’s true in both Dynasty and Road to Glory. But if you’re the coach, you have to go find the right menu.
How to Redshirt in Dynasty Mode
In Dynasty, open the Team Tab and look for the Redshirt Menu. Any player eligible to sit gets a name you can select. Already used their redshirt? Their name is grayed out. Simple enough.
But here’s where it gets tricky. If you redshirt a veteran or a highly-rated player who expects to play, you might lose them to the transfer portal. So think twice before sitting a four-star junior who just wants snaps. Instead, redshirt the raw freshmen or the two-star recruit who needs a year in the weight room. Let them learn the playbook without burning eligibility.
How to Redshirt in Road to Glory Mode
In Road to Glory, you don’t get a menu. You get game time. Or you don’t. If your player appears in four games or fewer during their freshman season, the game automatically redshirts them. So you need a plan to stay on the bench.
One way: pick a school with a loaded depth chart at your position. A program like Georgia, for example, might slot you as a third-string quarterback. You’ll ride the pine most of the season, simulate games, and boom — you’re a redshirt freshman with four years left.
How do you know where you’ll land? Go through the High School Experience. In the Schools List menu, you can see where every program projects you on their depth chart. That tells you whether you’ll start, sit, or fight for a job. Skip High School entirely, and you’re gambling on your initial star rating. Not ideal.
Another trick: fail your classes on purpose. It’s not glamorous, but it keeps you ineligible to play. That means you hit the four-game limit without ever stepping on the field. You’ll still earn XP, build Coach Trust, and even land brand deals while you’re on academic probation. Weird, but effective.
What Redshirting Gets You
An extra year is huge. You get more time to earn Skill Points, level up, and spend points on your ratings. You build Coach Trust, which unlocks more playcalls and pre-snap control. You build your Brand, which can lead to endorsement deals. And you focus on academics without losing game reps.
But you could also redshirt a whole season and still not crack the starting lineup. It happens. If the Bulldogs bury you, hit the Transfer Portal. Sign with Alabama or whoever will give you the ball. Make them regret it.
That’s really all there is to it. Redshirting is a tool, not a cheat code. Use it right and your career — or your dynasty — lasts longer than anyone expected.
