The NBA offseason has basically hit pause. Multiple teams are sitting on their hands, waiting to see where LeBron James lands before they make their next move. But according to his agent, Rich Paul, those teams might be waiting a while longer.
Paul appeared on the Game Over Podcast and didn’t have much of an update. Actually, he had none at all.
“There is none. I wish I knew,” Paul said. “He’s taking his time. He’s really evaluating things… I’ve really left him alone. Play golf, do the things you need to do. He understands where things are. When he’s ready, he’ll let me know.”
So LeBron is out on the course, thinking it over, while the rest of the league holds its breath. That sounds about right.
Who’s actually in the mix?
After leaving the Lakers, LeBron has been linked to basically every team that thinks it has a shot. The Cavaliers, Warriors, Heat, Timberwolves, Sixers and Nuggets have all been mentioned. But according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, some teams have gotten creative with their recruiting.
“Some of them have been able to send a voice note to LeBron James via Rich Paul,” Charania said. “It’s unclear whether Cleveland or Miami are among the teams that have sent a voice note to LeBron via Rich Paul. They kind of don’t need to; they already had him in their buildings.”
Charania also laid out a clear hierarchy of contenders. “When the Sixers got Jaylen Brown I did some research, and (LeBron) is taking their pitch very seriously. When I talk to teams now, I have a hierarchy of Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia, and then some teams on the periphery,” he said on The Straight Shooter Podcast.
Wait, LeBron is 41?
Yes. And he’s still really good. Last season he put up 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists while shooting 51.5 percent from the field over 60 games. That’s not just good for a guy his age. That’s just good. Any of those East teams would look a lot scarier with him in the rotation.
So the waiting game continues. Paul doesn’t know. LeBron is playing golf. And the rest of the NBA is stuck refreshing their phones.
