Hugo Gonzalez Showed Off a Nasty Bruise and the Celtics Are Fine With It

Boston Celtics guard Hugo Gonzalez walked into Summer League media availability with a bruise on his right arm that looked like someone tried to check his pulse with a baseball bat. It was dark, it was deep, and it was impossible to miss. So naturally, he made a game of it.

Gonzalez told reporters that he took a bet on how many questions it would take before someone asked about it. According to CLNS’ Noa Dalzell, the answer was not that many. The bruise came from a hard fall during FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers, where Gonzalez played for Spain. He insisted it’s nothing serious and he’s good to go for Summer League.

The bruise and what it means

Spain split their final two first-round games, blowing out Denmark 109-81 before losing a stunner to Georgia 91-89. They still finished first in Group I with a 5-1 record and advanced to the second round starting next month. Gonzalez averaged 12.5 points, 3.5 boards, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals in those two games. He didn’t play in the earlier group stage matches.

The 20-year-old is entering his second NBA season after being drafted 28th overall in 2025. He quickly became a fan favorite in Boston because of his defense, his energy, and the kind of relentless hustle that makes coaches nervous to sit him. Last season he averaged just 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 74 games, but his net rating of 11.9 told a different story. The guy made a difference every time he stepped on the floor, even if the box score didn’t scream about it.

Summer League and the Giannis trade that wasn’t

NBA.com’s Brian Martin listed Gonzalez among the top 15 players to watch in Summer League, specifically noting how his defense and bench energy impacted the Celtics last year. Now he gets real minutes in Vegas, and that should help him develop the offensive game Boston needs from him going forward.

There’s also the Giannis backdrop. Reports surfaced this offseason that the Celtics refused to include Gonzalez in trade talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak eventually ended up with the Heat. Boston’s front office clearly sees something in Gonzalez that makes him untouchable in a deal for a two-time MVP. That’s not nothing.

Gonzalez opens Summer League play Friday against the Toronto Raptors. The bruise will probably still be there. It won’t matter. The kid plays hard, talks trash, and apparently has enough self-awareness to turn a nasty black-and-purple arm into a betting game with the media. That’s the kind of guy Boston fans love anyway.
