Padres’ Mason Miller Offers Blunt Take on Trade Rumors: ‘I Don’t Have Control’

The trade rumors around Mason Miller aren’t going anywhere. And the Padres’ closer knows that better than anyone.

After San Diego’s Wednesday night game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Miller was asked about the constant speculation. He didn’t dodge it. He didn’t act offended. He just told the truth.

“I kind of take the trade stuff and put it on the back burner,” Miller said with a smile, per reporter Marty Caswell. “I didn’t have any control of it last year, and I won’t have control over it for several more years.”

He added: “I just think, putting my head down and focusing on today, is how I got about my season. And regardless of any rumors or anything like that, that is what I am going to continue to do.”

A year after the blockbuster deal

Last offseason, the Padres traded for Miller, sending their No. 1 prospect and more to the Athletics. The move was supposed to push San Diego deep into October. Instead, they lost to the Cubs in the NL Wild Card round.

Now a year later, the Padres are sitting outside the playoff picture. There’s still two months of baseball left, so nothing is settled. But the whispers have started. With a thin farm system and a roster that hasn’t clicked, some rival executives and insiders think trading baseball’s best closer would make sense for the long-term rebuild.

Miller doesn’t see it that way. Or at least, he’s not letting himself think about it.

What trading Miller would cost the Padres

Here’s the thing. The Padres’ farm system is not what it used to be. That much is true. But moving a generational arm like Miller to restock the pipeline would be a massive gamble. And probably a mistake.

Miller isn’t just a guy with a 100 mph fastball who can close games. He’s the kind of pitcher you build a championship bullpen around. The kind of arm that gets you through a seven-game series. Trading him now, while the team is still within striking distance of the playoffs, feels like waving a white flag too early.

“I didn’t have any control of it last year and I won’t have control over it for several more years.”

Miller said that line twice. It’s almost like he’s made peace with the chaos around him. He knows the business side of baseball. He knows his name gets floated every deadline. And he knows there’s nothing he can do about it except pitch.

So that’s what he’s doing. Whether the Padres front office follows his example or starts making calls remains to be seen. But Miller isn’t waiting around for an answer.
