Tyrese Maxey’s Agency Ties Could Be the Quiet Weapon in Philly’s LeBron Pitch

Tyrese Maxey’s Agency Ties Could Be the Quiet Weapon in Philly’s LeBron Pitch

LeBron James is weighing his options in free agency again. That much we know. But the usual suspects — Cleveland, Miami, Los Angeles — might have a new wrinkle to deal with this time around. And it’s not just about cap space or roster fit.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Philadelphia 76ers have a hidden advantage in their pursuit of LeBron, and it’s sitting right there in their own backcourt. Tyrese Maxey.

Windhorst pointed out that both Maxey and LeBron are represented by Clutch Sports, the agency LeBron co-founded with Rich Paul. That shared agency connection could be the thing that nudges Lebron toward Philadelphia, especially if he’s looking for more than just a basketball fit.

The happiness factor

LeBron has been pretty open about where he’s at in his career. It’s not just about winning anymore. Or at least, it’s not only about winning. He’s talked about happiness as a deciding factor. Where can he feel good showing up every day? Where does the environment click?

“I don’t necessarily know if it is the most attractive because you’re making a basketball case, and what LeBron has said is that it’s a happiness case,” Windhorst said on a recent podcast. “Can he be happy living in Philly? The big factor here is Tyrese Maxey.”

Windhorst went on to say that while a lot of the chatter has been about Jaylen Brown — since the Sixers traded for him last week — the Maxey connection might matter more in the long run. “The reason I think he’s seriously looking at Philadelphia is because of Tyrese Maxey, and that connection is with Clutch Sports, his agency, that he is basically a core founder of alongside Rich Paul. It’s the Tyrese Maxey connection that draws him in. That was the same thing with Anthony Davis that got Anthony Davis to the Lakers.”

Not just an agency play

Windhorst was quick to clarify that this isn’t some Clutch Sports conspiracy. Every top agency wants its stars to play together. That’s just how the business works. But in this case, the bond between Maxey and LeBron — through the agency — feels like a real pull factor.

“This is not just a Clutch Sports thing,” Windhorst said. “All of the top level agencies would have their clients work together, but this is a Tyrese Maxey thing. You would really want Tyrese Maxey sitting next to Bob Meyers, and I’m sure he has.”

Windhorst didn’t go so far as to call the Sixers the favorites. Cleveland and Miami still have strong cases, and LeBron has history with both. But as the second week of free agency rolls on, the Maxey factor is something worth watching. Philly might not be the frontrunner right now. But they’re in the conversation for a reason that has nothing to do with cap sheets or trade packages.
